Lost Muira Found - 43 Years later

Dec. 23 - Forty-three years after its debut, the one-and-only 1965 Turin Salon Lamborghini Miura chassis, designed by chassis genius Gian Paolo Dallara, and the raging bull company's first-ever transverse mid-mounted V12 engine (0293) has been acquired by Los Angeles based collectors.

The iconic show chassis had been stored for the past 30 years in Cyprus by that country's original Lamborghini concessionaire, Marios Kritikos. While visiting the Lamborghini factory in 1977, Mr. Kritikos took a fancy to the historic show unit. After successfully negotiating a future home for it, he arrived at the factory with his Range Rover and trailer, loaded it and drove away.

The 1965 Turin Salon Miura represents the very first mid-engined supercar theme for all marques, and is rightly considered to be the Holy Grail from which all road going supercars descend. Its re-emergence represents the most important Lamborghini discovery to date.

Thirty years later, and only one month after its discovery it has been imported to the US and now resides in the restoration facility of author and Muira expert, Gary Bobileff, where it will undergo a complete refurbishment to bring it to its former glory. The car will make its USA debut in the summer of 2009. Details remain to be announced.

Here's an EV You Never Saw Coming

Dec. 22 - Partnering with Hyundai Rotem, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motors Group, Leo Motors of Gyeonggi-do, Korea has developed an
electric multipurpose strategic vehicle for the Korean military. The vehicle can be manned or unmanned and has remote deployable
robotic capabilities.

The vehicle's 6x6 in-wheel motor system control with steering column and skid drive control provides it the ability to traverse various harsh terrain and the ability to turn around 360 degrees in one spot. The FAV (Fast Attack Vehicle) can reach speeds of 80 km/h (50 mph), travel for 100 km (62.4 miles) on a single charge and climb landscape at up to 40 degree angles.

The FAV is equipped with an advanced GPS and laser scan technology for intelligent 3D geometrical navigation. Additional features include specialized control technology to accomplish fast target tracking with silence and speed. Chances are good that you won't hear it coming either.

The company builds other EVs as well, including the S65 Sport Utility Vehicle, which drives 400 km on a single charge and hits 100 km (62.4 mph) from zero in just 4.5 seconds.

Go Riding. Be Happy.

Dec. 19 - Overall satisfaction with the motorcycle ownership experience has increased for a sixth consecutive year to a record-high level, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Motorcycle Competitive Information Study released this week.

The study finds that product quality has improved in 2008, compared with 2007, primarily due to a decrease in owner-reported problems. The overall number of problems reported averages 152 problems per 100 vehicles, down 8 from 2007. In addition, the number of owners who report having a problem-free experience with their motorcycle averages 42 percent in 2008, an improvement of 3 points, compared with 2007.

"Despite the fact that owners report paying 14 percent more for their motorcycles this year, they are also more satisfied with the value received for the money spent," said Tim Fox, research manager of the powersports practice at J.D. Power and Associates. "There are several motorcycle models with a higher price point that owners have indicated are a particularly good value for the money."

Also from the study: Among motorcycle owners who visit a dealer for repair work, 79 percent report that the repair was performed correctly the first time. During the past seven years, satisfaction with the engine and transmission has shown the greatest improvement among product-related aspects.

Global Economy Kills NSX

Dec. 18 - The automotive market slump in North America continues to have repercussions around the world. Top management at Honda have announced several measures aimed at maintaining profitability. Sales and profit forecasts have been adjusted downward, while executive pay levels are being cut and a number of plant openings are being delayed.

Along with these measures, further development of the Acura NSX sports car has been cancelled. Positioned as competition for the Audi R8 and Nissan GT-R, the model was well into its develoment cycle and anticipated to be unveiled as a 2010 model. The car was rumored to have a front-mounted V10 engine, capable of output in the 500 hp range. The NSX was also expected to showcase a number of advanced technologies. What was believed to be an NSX prototype was seen testing this summer in Germany.

The original NSX sports car ended production in 2005, after a 14-year run. The distinctive supercar, first shown at the Chicago Auto Show in February 1989 featured a mid-engine V6 and an all-aluminum monocoque chassis. With a naturally aspirated VTEC engine delivering 270 hp, the lighteight car was capable of 0 - 60 times just over five seconds.

The company has not ruled out the possibility of an NSX program revival sometime in the future.

Caterham R500 is Top Gear's Car of the Year

Dec. 17 - The British television show, Top Gear, has named the Caterham Superlight R500 its 2008 'Car of the Year'.

The most extreme version of the legendary Seven appeared on the popular BBC show for the first time at the beginning of December,
instantly leaving a lasting impression on presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. First shown at the London Motor
Show, the car weighs in at 460 kg.

Caterham got together with Minster Race engines and nutured an incredible 230 bhp out of the Rover K series motor. With a unique Caterham Racing inlet manifold, steel con rods and crankshaft, Cosworth forged pistons, a dry sump and a specially developed exhaust system with carbon cladding, this is a very impressive power unit that will rev to a 9,200 rpm.

In the hands of Top Gear’s mystery test driver, The Stig, the R500 put in one of the most visually spectacular laps around their benchmark test circuit, Dunsfold. Free of any driver aids, the Seven slipped and slid to a lap time that disgraced cars costing over ten times as much.

Despite incredibly cold conditions, the Seven was less than a second slower than the absolute record around the 'Top Gear lap' and rapid enough to steal the overall fifth fastest time, previously held by the 1 million pound Bugatti Veyron.

Maserati Custom Program

Dec. 16 - Introduced at the Bologna Motor Show, the MC Sport Line customization program focuses on the racing vocation of the Maserati, fresh from its latest international triumph in the FIA GT championship.

The name "MC Sport Line" sums up the experience acquired on the track by the Maserati Corse department, whose contribution to the design of the functional components has been invaluable. The world of motor racing also inspired Maserati's designers when it came to styling, reflected in the extensive use of carbon fiber.

Aerodynamics can be modified thanks to the addition of front and rear carbon-fiber spoilers, which benefit from track tests conducted on the GranTurismo MC Concept; the new aerodynamics not only optimizes the vertical load but gives the car a very distinctive appearance, as do the side skirts with central panel finished in matt black, adding a dynamic edge to the side view.

The sporty look of the exterior can be completed with the mirror housing and door handles, also made from carbon fiber. The same dark shade is reflected in the glossy black 20” wheel rims that match the dark line of the exterior perfectly. The steering wheel rim is also made from carbon fiber, as are the control stalks for the electro-actuated transmission and the body of the instrument panel, dashboard and door panels.

Under the skin, the suspension has been stiffened thanks to new, stiffer springs, shock absorbers and anti-roll bars; the new suspension set-up is synchronized with a specific Maserati Stability Program software, allowing the driver more freedom. The car is now 10 mm lower than the GranTurismo S, resulting in a performance on the road of the GranTurismo S that is absolutely uncompromising in terms of handling and driving enjoyment.

BMW Z-4 Re-launches at NAIAS

Dec. 15 - The classic roadster is back... more powerful and more stylish than ever before. The BMW Z4, the only car in its segment combining classic roadster proportions, rear-wheel drive and a retractable hardtop. The 2009 BMW Z4 Roadster will make its North American debut at the 2009 North American International Auto Show on January 11.

This BMW Z4 is the first BMW roadster to protect its occupants from wind and weather with a fully retractable hardtop. The two-piece aluminum shell opens and closes at the touch of a button within 20 seconds, while the compact packaging of the folding roof enables the Z4 Roadster to retain the characteristic, slender proportions of its predecessor.

The roof compartment and the luggage compartment are separated from one another by a moveable partition, which may be folded up to increase luggage space if the roof will remain closed.

The new Z4 is being launched exclusively with inline-6 engines, a choice of two engines providing both power and performance. The most dynamic version of the new Z4 comes with the world’s first inline-6 engine to feature twin turbochargers, High Precision Injection, and an all-aluminum crankcase. Maximum output of 300 hp comes at 5,800 rpm, and the BMW Z4 sDrive35i accelerates to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds.

Hold Your Breath...

Dec. 12 - Reports from Washington confirm this morning that efforts to secure bridge financing for the North American auto industry have failed. The impact of this announcement is already rolling around the world and North America is not yet open for business.

Dire warnings over bloodshed on Wall Street today appear justified, as shares of European car makers plunged on the news. BMW,
Volkswagen and Daimler were particularly affected. Overnight, shares in Toyota dropped by ten percent on the Tokyo exchange, while Honda dropped by 12.5%.

At risk is the established North American auto parts supply chain, which is intertwined among all auto assemblers in the country - foreign or domestic. The potential collapse of General Motors is likely to pull a significant part of that chain down with it. That loss, in turn, puts the assembly operations of the remaining companies at risk due to a shortage of parts and the time needed for the remaining suppliers to retool.

Already, parts suppliers to Chrysler have started asking for COD terms in an attempt to limit their financial exposure. The company has admitted that it is likely to have trouble paying its bill in the New Year. For some suppliers, it is likely far too late, as the Big 3 have often pushed supplier terms to the limit.

In response to calls for executive action, the White House said it would consider alternatives but offered no assurances.

Credit Unions Invest in America

Dec. 10 - A partnership between General Motors and 1,200 Midwest credit unions will offer credit union members supplier pricing on new vehicles and make $10 billion in auto loans available. More than Four million credit union members in Michigan will be eligible this Dec. through June of 2009.

The Michigan Credit Union League will join the Illinois, Indiana and Ohio credit union associations in the partnership to fill the gap as other auto lenders retreat from the market. The Credit Union Discount from GM will be available beginning December 8, 2008 through June 30, 2009. All current and new credit union members in the four allied states will receive the GM Supplier Discount plus another $250 off of any new vehicle through January 5, 2009. The discounts, among the best and most broad-based values offered by GM, will stack on top of most other incentives being offered.

"Credit unions have a long history of helping hard-working Americans in troubled times," said Daniel A. Mica, president and CEO of the Credit Union National Association, the nation’s largest credit union trade group. The "Invest in America" program will be piloted in a four-state region with possibilities to go nationwide early in 2009.

CUcorp will coordinate the pilot program, and both Ford and Chrysler have also been invited to participate and are working toward similar agreements. The credit union consortium includes the four state trade associations and CUNA.

Fisker Karma Production Car

Shortly after releasing our December issue, Fisker released photos of the production version of the Karma plug-in hybrid vehicle. Remarkably, the design has survived almost completely intact from the initial concept car.

Audi R8 Gets 525-hp V10 in Germany

Dec. 9 - With a 0 - 100 km (62 mph) time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 316 kph (197 mph), the newly announced Audi R8 5.2 FSI adds breathtaking performance to its already stunning design. The 5.2-liter, 10-cylinder engine delivers 386 kW (525 hp) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft) of torque, using direct fuel injection.

With a specific power output is 100.9 hp per liter of displacement, the V10 engine in the production car will be almost identical in construction to that in the upcoming FIA GT3 race version. Equipped with a six-speed manual gearshift, the new R8 weighs only 1,620 kg (3571 lb). The engine accounts for 258 kg (569 lb) - just 31 kg (68 lb) more than the V8.

The four wheel drive, mid-engine design provides an ideal axle load distribution of 44 to 56 percent, running on 19-inch tires (235/35 front, 295/30 rear), with 8-piston calipers clamping 15" front rotors and 4-piston calipers with 14" rotors in the rear.

A very distinctive highlight of the R8 V10 are the LED headlights as standard equipment. Audi is the world's first automaker to use LEDs for the high beam, low beam, daytime running lights, and turn signals. Each headlight integrates 54 of these high-tech light sources.

The Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro will be rolled out in Germany in the second quarter of 2009 at a basic price of EUR 142,400.

Automotive Traveller Entertains, Enriches

Dec. 5 - "I never worry about people stealing my ideas. If it were an original one, I'd have to stuff it down their throats anyway." While our idea of combining cars and travel to build a magazine is something we love, it is far from original. You just have to check out Rich Truesdell's Automotive Traveller web site.

The web site and blog present a contemporary mix of current and nostalgic-driven items and discussions. You can also access four past issues of the Automotive Traveller online magazine. Rich's past adventures range from touring Berlin in a Trabant before the wall came down, to running around Peru and Ecuador in a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano.

The online magazines are on hiatus at the moment, but Rich is not. Far from it. When I spoke with him earlier this week, he was planning a European trip for next spring that would take in some of the less tourist-oriented locations in Eastern Europe. It is obvious that Rich is an automotive enthusiast in every sense of the word. We cannot wait to see what he comes up with
next.

Far from being a competitor, we have been talking with Rich about content sharing and collaboration over future projects. It is a big world out there and there's an inexhaustible supply of great stories, so there is plenty of room for everyone. Check out and bookmark his Automotive Traveller web site when you've got some time. Be cautioned, though, you just might invest an hour or more.

Trickle Down

Dec. 2 - For those that cannot comprehend that the Big 3 automakers do not exist inside a baloon, the tire industry has been directly affected by the automotive market slowdown. Well, duh.

According to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, tire shipments are projected to decline by more than six percent this year compared to 2007 with a further one percent decline predicted for 2009. The 2009 forecast assumes that an economic recovery will occur in the latter half of the year. Not everyone agrees with this thought.

One out of every 10 U.S. jobs, or about 13 million, is auto-related. America can't have a healthy economy without a healthy auto industry, because autos represent the country's largest manufacturing base. Almost 4% of U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is auto-related. Every auto plant job generates about 5 jobs among suppliers and the surrounding community. By comparison, a Wall Street job generates 2 additional jobs.

There are those that seek to punish the domestic automakers because they don't care for their product. This short-sighted, pig-headed approach would ensure the loss of nearly 3.0 million jobs in the U.S. economy for 2009. The loss of tax revenue to federal, state and local governments would amount to $60.1 billion in 2009. Let the lemmings jump off their own cliff, but don't take the rest of us with you.

A5 Gets Nod from Automobile Mag

Nov. 28 - Audi accepted Automobile Magazine's 2009 Design of the Year Award for the Audi A5, solidifying its position at the leading edge of automotive styling.

The recognition for the A5 marks the second consecutive year that Audi has earned the top design award from one of North America's leading automotive publications. The Audi R8 sports car won the magazine's Design of the Year and Car of the Year awards for 2008.

Editors praised the restraint, elegance and the "perfect execution" of the Audi coupe's design. Seeing the overall design quality of the A5 on the road cinched the decision for Automobile's editors. "Audi," the magazine noted, "has indeed created a beautiful car."

Automotive design often succeeds best when all of a car's elements fit with seamless proportions and careful attention to details. This was the case with the A5, the first coupe offered by Audi in the U.S. in nearly a generation.

October sales of the coupe in the U.S. set a record for the third consecutive month. The A5, which first arrived in U.S. showrooms late last year, comes with the powerful and highly efficient 3.2-liter FSI engine. It produces 265 hp and has a 0-60 mph time of 6.1 seconds.

Accent Retains Crown as America's Least Expensive Car

Nov. 26 - According to manufacturer, the high-mileage 2009 Hyundai Accent has a starting price of $9,970, making it the least expensive new car on the market. But it's also the "Most Dependable Sub-Compact Car" available (as determined by the J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study) and one of the most fuel efficient vehicles on the road today -- a trifecta that no other car can match.

At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai announced even more good news for the Accent, revealing that next year a special high-mileage "Blue" edition will be available that offers even higher levels of fuel economy without adding to the price. Accent "Blue" will feature fuel-efficient modifications to reduce engine friction and rolling resistance, enhance aerodynamics, optimize gearing and revise engine calibrations for maximum efficiency.

Pricing for all other Accent models remains unchanged, delivering outstanding value throughout the lineup.

Hyundai Accent received the lowest number of problems per 100 vehicles among sub-compact cars in the proprietary J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study(SM). Study based on responses from over 52,000 original owners of 2005 model-year vehicles, measuring more than 250 models. Proprietary study results are based on experiences and perceptions of owners surveyed in January to April 2008.

Crash Safety Continues to Improve

Nov. 25 - A total of 72 vehicles received the Insurance Institute for Highway safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award for 2009. This is more than double the number of 2008 recipients and more than 3 times the number of 2007 winners. Top Safety Pick recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, and rear crashes based on good ratings in Institute tests.

For the first time ever, winners represent every class of vehicle the Institute tests except microcars. Most car, minivan, and SUV models, midsize convertibles, and small and large pickups are eligible. Ford and its subsidiary Volvo have 16 winners, including the Ford F-150 large pickup.

Honda, Acura, and Subaru, which picked up 4 awards, are notable for 2009 because they have at least one Top Safety Pick in every vehicle class in which they compete.

Chrysler is the only major automaker lacking a single Top Safety Pick. It could have picked up 5 awards if the head restraints were better in the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring, the Sebring convertible, and the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country.

A 2008 analysis of insurance claims found that drivers of vehicles with seat/head restraint combinations rated good in Institute evaluations were 15 percent less likely to sustain neck injuries in rear-end crashes.

Porsche Releases Panamera Pix

Nov. 24 - Porsche has released the first official photos of the new Panamera. The unique four-seater was conceived and designed as a four-door grand touring sports car, combining numerous talents in typical Porsche style: sporting driving dynamics, a spacious interior, and the supreme comfort of a Gran Turismo. Joining the 911, Boxster and Cayman sports cars as well as the Cayenne SUV, the Panamera is Porsche's fourth model series.

The Panamera designers have succeeded in positioning it as a brand-new and truly different model while retaining the looks of a typical Porsche. Through its proportions, the Panamera stands out in its market segment: measuring 76 inches wide and 55.8 inches in height, it is wider and lower than comparable four-door models.

The unmistakable GT silhouette is created by the car's overall length of 195.7 inches and short, sporting overhangs. In its styling and details, the Panamera follows the design philosophy refined over decades on the 911 and successfully implemented on the Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne.

The top version of the Panamera comes with even more sophisticated all-wheel drive, available on other models as an option. Porsche also is preparing a fuel-efficient version of the Panamera with hybrid drive.

Consumer Reports' Fear of Success

Nov. 21 - After years of bashing North American automotive products and pointing consumers to imported vehicles, it seems that Consumer Reports finally understands the consequences of their distinctive bias. The company released the following statement today.

"Consumer Reports has concerns about letting domestic automakers fail," the magazine's publisher, Consumers Union, said in a written statement. "The loss of any major auto manufacturer would leave consumers with fewer choices and the industry with less competition and innovation, particularly at a transitional time when the industry is pursuing alternative energy technology. Moreover, the impact of losing a domestic automaker on the U.S. economy and jobs could be severe."

Well, duh! The volume of commentary over a monetary package that is 28 times less than the one earmarked for the financial sector is simply astounding. The current economic woes came from Wall Street, not Michigan Avenue. It remains a mystery why some people and organizations cannot prioritize their doggerel to reflect reality.

At least, CR appears to have acknowledged that things may have gone a little too far. Far too late, though.

1st-Ever Thunderbird Goes to Auction

Nov. 18 - One of the most significant American sports cars ever built, the first production Ford Thunderbird, will be sold at the 38th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event in Scottsdale, Ariz., Jan. 11-18, 2009.

The Raven Black 1955 T-Bird was produced by Ford Motor Company on Sept. 9, 1954, and represents the birth of Ford’s sports car program. Penned by Ford designer Frank Hershey, the Thunderbird was a hit among sports car fans across America and became an instant competitor for the Chevrolet Corvette.

The first T-Bird is equipped with a 292 Y-block engine, Fordomatic (automatic) transmission, power steering, power windows and power seats. The creature comforts incorporated into the build gave the debut of the first T-Bird even more sizzle.

Ford’s new star was tested and featured in numerous articles upon its release, including “Testing the Thunderbird” in the Oct. 4, 1954 issue of “Sports Illustrated.” The first Thunderbird has also been displayed at venues across the United States, from Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn, Mich., to the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

The 1955 Thunderbird will be joined by approximately 1,000 collector vehicles and automobilia to be sold at the historic Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction.

EV Performance is Not an Oxymoron

Nov. 17 - At the end of September, Chrysler announced their intent to produce a plug-in electric vehicle for the 2010 model year. With the announcement, the company showed three contenders for production. One of these was a two-seat sports car, simply named the Dodge EV.

Powered by a 268 horsepower electric motor, the car is also capable of generating 480 lb-ft of torque instantly. That level of torque output can accelerate the Dodge EV to 60 mph in less than five seconds, with quarter-mile times of 13 seconds.

Last Friday, Chrysler, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Times, put on a little show at the Rose Bowl Stadium, where they pitted the Dodge EV against a HEMI Challenger SRT-8 in a couple of inpromptu drag runs. By comparison, the SRT-8 is rated for 425 horsepower and 420 ft-lb of torque.

While we don't know the weight of the Dodge EV, the Challenger is a little over 4000 pounds and in every run, the little EV blew the doors off its competition, and by several car lengths. The reason for this is how electric motors develop torque, delivering it instantaneously rather than as a function of engine speed.

It may take some changing of perceptions, but there could be some interesting times ahead for those that embrace "green performance."

Pimp My EV

Nov. 15 - The Essen Motor Show in Germany showcases the country's efforts in vehicle modifications for a market that is hungry for distinction. The first of its kind may have shown up here in the form of a Tesla Roadster, tricked out by Brabus. Founded in 1977, the elite Mercedes tuner always finds a way to keep to the forefront of the performance market.

In this case, the tuner was unable to modify the electric drivetrain (a problem that many classic tuners will soon face), so they applied their expertise and vision to other areas. A staggered setup of 18x7" wheels up front and 19x8.5" wheels in back, all four wrapped in Pirelli tires, delivers a more aggressive look than the factory kit. Carbon fiber accents and the matte white paint job give the exterior a striking appearance.

An idea that we've advocated for some time now has finaly been realized in the Brabus Tesla. To combat the silence of EV's, a sound generator has been installed, that emits the engine note of a V8 race car or more futuristic sounds. The pitch and volume of the sound is related to the power output of the motor, so it sounds rather realistic.

Many mechanics at leading tuner shops may soon be turning in their wrenches for multimeters and oscilloscopes. Here is a shop that is taking early, but certain steps in that direction.

SL 65 AMG Black Series is Tops

Nov. 14 - Now 210 lbs lighter than the SL 65 AMG and equipped with the AMG 6.0-l V12 biturbo engine, the new two-seater from AMG-Mercedes can reach a speed of 60 mph from a standing start in just 3.6 seconds. The top speed is an electronically-limited 199 mph.

The AMG 6.0-l V12 biturbo engine, developing a maximum output of 661 hp at 5,400 rpm, and an electronically-limited maximum torque of 738 lb-ft between 2,200 and 2,400 rpm, assures the dynamic performance of a super sports car. Without limits, the V12 biturbo engine would develop a maximum torque of 885 lb-ft.

In appearance, the SL 65 AMG Black Series is reminiscent of the successful AMG racing cars, such as the DTM C-Class. The distinctive wide wheel arches fenders, extendable spoiler and rear apron with diffuser fins are a direct transfer from the motor sports world. Compared with the production SL 65 AMG, the Black Series has 4.5" more track width on the front axle, and 4" more on the rear axle.

The selected wheel/tire combination is responsible for ensuring the best possible performance of the SL 65 AMG Black Series on the race circuit: on the front axle, 265/35 R 19 tires are fitted onto 9.5” AMG light alloy wheels. On the rear axle, the impressive format is AMG 11.5 x 20 light alloy wheels with 325/30 R 20 tyres. The Sport Maxx GT tyres are supplied by DTM Motor Sports partner Dunlop; they provide especially good grip and amazing cornering speeds.

New, Easy Clean Wheels Debut

Nov. 12 - Wheel manufacturer Alcoa has developed a product that makes dirt-engrained wheels a thing of the past. With Dura-Bright technology, it is easy to remove dirt and brake dust with minimal cleaning. Using only water for cleaning, the technology offers a polished finish that will neither chip, fade or yellow like traditional alloy wheel finishes. Penetrating the wheel itself, the unique Dura-Bright technology will not crack, peel nor corrode ensuring that the wheel stays looking good for many years.

The metal treatment technology, proven to last in the tough truck market, will also make life easier for consumers when they come to sell their car. "Black specks and yellowing can ruin the appearance of a car, making it harder to get the best price when selling," explains Mike Parnell, Vice President and General Manager – Alcoa Auto Wheels.

Alcoa forged aluminium wheels provide increased strength and durability gains and are typically twice as strong as a comparable cast aluminium wheel in crush tests. A forged wheel also reduces un-sprung weight on a car, maximizing vehicle performance, including more responsive steering and braking performance, while reducing weight compared to a similar cast aluminium wheel by over 20 percent.

The first european application will be available this winter on the new Audi A6.

Headlight LED Development Continues

Nov. 11 - According to the company, the new OSTAR Headlamp LED from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors will simplify automotive headlamp optical systems by emitting a highly efficientand clearly defined light beam without the need for external shutters that are common in current designs.

The high-powered LED is available in one-, two-, three-, four-, or five-chip arrays, providing the flexibility to create different illumination patterns for virtually any headlamp design. A glass cover, bonded to the frame, protects the chips and helps prevent scatter losses.

With a street legal color temperature of 6,000 Kelvin, OSTAR headlamp LEDs emit light nearly identical to natural daylight, increasing night driving safety by reducing driver fatigue. Additionally individual components allow headlamp designers to more precisely place and aim high and low beams to reduce glare for oncoming traffic.

"Compared with classic HID systems, that provide about 35 to 45 percent of useable light on the road, the OSTAR LED provides about 10 percent more useable light," said Knittl. "The OSTAR Headlamp also delivers a lifespan of 10,000 to 20,000 hours. In fact, our LEDs not only outperform conventional solutions but generally last longer than the life of the vehicle."

Fisker Opens in Detroit

Nov. 10 - Fisker Automotive, Inc., a green American premium car company, has announced the opening of a new Engineering and Development Center in Pontiac, Michigan. The 34,000 square foot facility will house up to 200 engineers and designers, who will support the development and production program of Fisker Automotive's first production car, the Fisker Karma.

While other automotive companies and suppliers are closing their doors, the hybrid vehicle developer is planning for success. "The available talent, supplier base and infrastructure in Michigan will help us reach our production goal," said Fisker Automotive COO Bernhard Koehler. "While Fisker Automotive will continue to be headquartered in Irvine, CA, the new facility will allow us the opportunity to collaborate with our Michigan supplier base and have everyone under one roof."

The opening of the facility comes on the heels of Fisker Automotive's recent announcement that it prevailed in a lawsuit brought against the company by Tesla Motors Inc. With 50 miles of electric range and more than 350 miles of total range, the Fisker Karma will have the potential for a fuel economy of over 100 miles per gallon (MPG) on extended drives. Boasting a top speed of 125mph and 0-60 acceleration in less than 6 seconds, the Fisker Karma is poised to be the world's first true luxury plug-in hybrid sports car.

Watch for an in-depth review of the Fisker Karma concept in the December issue of UberDrive Magazine. It is both a fascinating and daring vehicle.

USA Chases Land Speed Record

Nov. 8 - There's a healthy rivalry brewing between the U.S. and U.K. over the world land speed racing record. The Brits took if from the U.S. in 1997, and now the U.S. wants it back. Today the record stands at just over 763mph, captured by the British on October 15th 1997 with the ThrustSSC jet powered car.

Now, an American/Canadian team in Washington State has a 50,000hp converted F-104 jet car ready to travel over 800 mph to bring the record back to the U.S. Interest in the sport of World Land Speed Racing has recently been sparked with the announcement that current record holder, Andy Green, was teaming up with Richard Noble, the previous record-holder, to have
another go at the record.

In an interview with the Seattle Weekly earlier this year Green stated: "I am a big supporter of the current and planned attempts on the World Land Speed Record -- 11 years is more than long enough for it to stand and it's high time that someone got out there and broke it again -- preferably several times."

The only thing stopping a hale and hearty U.S. and U.K. rivalry is lack of sponsorship money to fund the effort. "World Land Speed Record Racing is an expensive sport," stated Douglas Schwartz, Media Director for the team. "The North American Eagle has the power and the aerodynamics to break the record in 2009.

Don't Mess with his Gran Torino

Oct. 30 - Word out of Hollywood is that Clint Eastwood's next directorial effort, Gran Torino, will be previewed with his current one, Changeling.

Scheduled for a December 17 release, Eastwood plays the role of a disaffected widower who sees his neighborhood go in directions he'd rather not. The action begins when a local gang arrives to steal Eastwood's pride and joy - a 1973 Ford Gran Torino Sport.

The Korean War vet defends his property and begins a larger quest that few others than Eastwood could pull off with any credibility. About his character, Eastwood said, "I'm a weirdo in it. I play a real racist… But it also has redemption." The role was sufficient to pull the 77-year old out of retirement from acting, which he had announced after finishing Million Dollar Baby.

Both the car and veteran's prejudice begin to fade as the action develops into a good shoot-em-up, smash-em-up adventure that, in the end, does underscore a hopeful and positive approach to life... so long as you don't take too much crap along the way.

If this has piqued your curiosity, you can watch the movie trailer here.

A5 is Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year

Oct. 23 - The Audi A5 earned the Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year Award in the luxury on-road category, outperforming 10 competitors. The awards, now in their fifth year, recognize cars and trucks that are best suited to meet the demands of an active and athletic lifestyle.

When the A5 debuted last spring it marked the first time in 16 years that Audi had offered a coupe to U.S. luxury car buyers. Audi loaded the A5 with sporty features, such as a powerful V-6 engine, direct steering and Audi dynamic suspension. The A5 takes just 5.8 seconds from 0-60 mph.

The awards are presented by the Active Network. The selection of the Active Lifestyle Vehicles of the year emerged from two stages of judging. The first round involved an automotive jury, which narrowed the field of 60 entries competing in seven categories.

After four finalists were chosen in each category, the award's sponsors asked elite athletes from the San Diego region to test drive each of the vehicles and offer their opinions, which count for half of the award tallies. Altogether, 17 athletes participated, including professional beach volleyball players, triathlon competitors and a former NFL kicker. The automotive experts then registered their finalist votes for the other half of the tallies.

"Involving the athletes offers a great opportunity get fresh perspectives on the various vehicles so it becomes an impromptu focus group of an elite and active target market" said Nina Russin, jury coordinator for the Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year Awards. "What was interesting with the A5 was how the athletes really reacted to the car's athletic performance."

Hybrid Taxis Not a Good Idea

Oct. 9 - Two of the world's largest automakers, Toyota and Honda, have issued outright warnings against using their hybrid passenger vehicles as commercial taxicabs.

In late 2007, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) mandated that all new taxis, the vast majority of which are required to have partitions, be hybrids or other vehicles that achieve 25 miles-per-gallon, but a 2008 engineer's report that finds hybrids to be unsafe and unfit as New York City taxicabs.

In response to an August, 2008 request that companies certify their hybrids or alternative fuel vehicles are manufacturer-approved to beused as taxicabs, a spokesman for Honda said "Honda vehicles are not sold or recommended for use as taxicabs."

Toyota, the largest manufacturer of hybrids in the world, reportedly has not responded to the request. A Toyota spokesperson told theNew York Times on April 27, that "our engineers are nervous about it because they were not designed for commercial use." According to the
article, "Toyota did not help convert cars into taxis because they were not intended to be driven so heavily."

Additional concerns over crashworthiness of taxis fitted with partitions between the driver and passengers have surfaced. Ford, General Motors and Nissan have refused to certify the crashworthiness of their hybrid New York City taxicabs when fitted with the mandatory
partitions.

Consumer Reports Cites RainX Latitude

Oct. 8 - Every minute of the day, 1 billion tons of rain falls on the earth. The total amount of precipitation received each year as snow, hail, and rain is equivalent to 10 million gallons of water for every person in the United States. So, why do we ignore our windshield wipers the way we do?

Consumer Reports tested replacement windshield wipers on 185 staffers’ cars. Researchers reported that all of the windshield wipers provided very good or excellent performance when new, but most quickly degrade after six to nine months of regular use. The RainX Latitude was the only wiper that began with very good performance and maintained that level through six months. All others dropped in performance after six months.

In addition, purchase price was not a clear predictor of performance. In the group of 15 wiper models tested, three of the top four were among the least expensive. That includes the top-rated Valeo 600 Series, the Anco 31 Series, and the Michelin RainForce.

The people at RainX suggest that an easy way to remember to proactively change your wiper blades is to replace them on Groundhog Day. When wiper blades no longer make proper contact with the windshield surface, they can begin to squeak, chatter, skip, smear or streak reducing driving visibility. Whether the Groundhog predicts six more weeks of winter or an early spring, new wiper blades are necessary to prepare you for 6 weeks of harsh winter driving conditions or 6 weeks of Spring showers.

GM's New Engine Plant

Two engines will be built at the new facility. A 1.4-liter turbo for the Chevrolet Cruze and a naturally aspirated version for the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle (E-REV). These are new members of an engine family already deployed successfully around the world, primarily in Europe. The engines will play a key role in GM’s plan to double global production of small four-cylinder engines by 2011, with more than half of that increase coming from North America.

The investment in Flint is one of several that have been announced at U.S. plants in the past 10 years, adding up to over a $9 billion total investment in Michigan and more than $42 billion in the United States. The investment includes construction of the new 552,000 square foot plant, machinery, equipment and special tooling to support production of the new 4-cylinder engines. In addition to the $349 million facility investment, GM will invest an additional $21 million for vendor tooling to support the new Flint operations. Construction on the new facility is slated to begin immediately, with completion in 2010.

Within the new engine plant will be GM Powertrain’s most flexible and competitive engine assembly lines in the world, with approximately 300 highly flexible stations that will allow assembly of multiple 4-cylinder engine families without retooling. In addition, the plant will be landfill free, meaning no waste from manufacturing operations will go to landfills, but will be recycled, reused or converted to energy, proving the plant will be as environmentally sound as the products it manufactures.

Dealers Can Improve

Sept. 25 - A majority of vehicles are rejected only after a new-vehicle shopper has visited a dealership, according to a J.D. Power and Associates Study released this week. The study analyzed the reasons why consumers consider a model but ultimately purchase a different one and found that 80 percent of vehicles are rejected after a new-vehicle shopper has visited a dealership.

Three dealer-related issues are among the top reasons for not purchasing a vehicle: another dealer has better service; limited availability of the specific vehicle shoppers are looking for on dealer lots; and lack of professionalism among personnel at the dealership.

The study also finds that an increasing number of shoppers have considered buying an Asian brand -- 63 percent in 2008, up from 60 percent in 2007. Conversely, the proportion of shoppers who considered buying a domestic brand has decreased -- down to 55 percent in 2008 from 58 percent in 2007.

Customers who purchase a domestic brand instead of an Asian brand most commonly cite a desire to "buy American" as their primary reason for purchase, followed by rebates and incentives offered, and vehicle price.

Shoppers who cross-shop among Asian and domestic brands are more likely to purchase an Asian brand and most often cite retained value, reliability and gas mileage as primary reasons for their choice.
